HS Code Classification for Importers: Why It Matters
Wrong classification = penalties and delays. This guide simplifies the HS Code system and teaches you how to classify your product correctly.
HS Code Classification for Importers: Why It Matters
The Harmonized System (HS) Code is the “international ID” for every commodity. Correct classification = correct duties + smooth procedures. Errors = penalties and delays.
What is HS Code?
An international system of 6–10 digits classifying every commodity in the world. It consists of:
- First 6 digits: standardized internationally
- Additional digits: country-specific (Saudi Arabia uses up to 12 digits in some cases)
Why Classification Matters
- Determining the right customs duty
- Knowing required certificates (SABER, SFDA, etc.)
- Knowing import restrictions
- Benefiting from customs exemptions
Examples of Classification Mistakes
Example 1: Electronics
- “Electrical devices” — too generic
- The correct classification specifies the device type (TV, radio, etc.)
Example 2: Food
- “Food” — insufficient
- You must specify: fresh, frozen, canned, organic, etc.
How to Classify Your Product Correctly
- Identify the main material of the product
- Identify the use (consumer, industrial, medical)
- Review HS tables on the ZATCA website
- Consult an expert when unsure
